The Facts

The Facts
Until now, the only people with access to stem cell treatments are the ones who have been fortunate enough to have either collected and privately stored cord blood at their birth or received a donated supply likely from a matching relative.

For stem cell treatments, ABO blood typing is irrelevant, but cord blood and bone marrow donors must have a closely matching protein marker called HLA, or Human Leukocyte Antigen. Clinical research supports related umbilical cord blood transplantation is effective; however, only 30% of patients have a chance of finding a related donor currently. Research for unrelated transplantation is equally effective, yet does not maintain effectiveness due to partial-HLA matching.

Therefore, a supply increase in unrelated cord blood donations provides the best chances for a successful recovery providing unrelated patients a higher probability of receiving a full-HLA matching unit. It is essential that umbilical cord blood be collected and donated from a broad and diverse population so that 70% of patients have the opportunity to recover.
